The Point of Sale (POS) is the point of sale for goods or services. Sales staff interact simultaneously with customers and POS software.
As part of my work-study activity, I supported the development of a corresponding POS app through user research and UX/UI Design. Since the design is subject to secrecy before publication, I present here a privately created variant. In addition, I document my working method from the problem definition to the concrete solution.
→ Description
In the project, an existing POS app was fundamentally reworked, for example by adding more payment options and improving the user experience. The interface was anchored in the payment app of a third-party provider. A particular challenge thus arose in the frictionless integration of the interface to be redesigned into the existing structure.
→ My role
- Research & Benchmarking
- UX/UI Design
- User Research (Interviews)
- Graphic Design
- Personas
→ Problem space
- No offline payment possible
- Current user interface not adapted to tablet use
- Limited Whitelabel options
- Previous user flow is too long
- Too many clicks and selectable options before getting to the desired destination
→ Solution space
- The new implementation must have a short path to the target and be accessible with just a few clicks
- The UI elements must be compatible for tablet use
- Important functions, such as the further addition and deletion of products, must be quickly accessible
→ Learnings
- Iterative work and close communication between the development team and the third-party provider require a high degree of flexibility in the design
- Users also get used to suboptimal interaction patterns. They sometimes find it difficult to switch to simpler solutions
- When selecting interview partners, a high degree of selectivity (e.g., the requirement of owning an Apple iPad) sometimes conflicts with the goal of having a sufficiently large number of test participants. A compromise must be made here
→ UI
The illustrations show a privately created variant of the user interface. However, this was also developed on the basis of the insights gained from the user research.
